The Heart

I’ve learned that the more the heart breaks, the more it wants to help. It’s as if there is a deep learning around love that only the heart understands.

A cracked dark blue stone heart rests on blue black sand, glowing warmly from within as golden light shines through its fractures.

Once we allow the ocean of tears to travel from the very depths of our being, we learn the power of what ‘being’ really means.

There is a devotion towards allowing ourselves to fully engage with our own pain and give presence to it without the fear of the mind wanting to avoid and run away. The heart speaks a language that the mind attempts to translate, but the more the mind tries, the more it has to surrender to the presence of the heart.

This is the power of ‘doing’. Stepping beyond the desire to hold onto everything that makes us who we believe we are. This includes our stories, our perceptions, our coping strategies, even our own beliefs.

Once the heart opens, there is only growth, for the heart knows the way.

This way is the beginning of ‘doing'.

How many of us ask our heart to beat?

To pulsate and push the blood around our bodies, sustaining our own life.

None.. Is the answer.

The heart knows.

I remember during my years training to become a nurse, I witnessed open heart surgery and I had tears in my eyes. At that time in my life, I believed I was following the way of the heart but I soon learned that I had not surrendered to my own tears, relinquishing the ocean of sadness within me.

Those tears I shared when standing in the operating theatre were beyond comprehension, for I was witnessing a miracle that many of us never see or even sense. I have learned that often doctors have an obsession to fix, especially surgeons who become mechanics of a miracle that we call the human body.

But to step beyond this fixing and connect with the core feelings in the body is the way of ‘doing’ guiding us towards our own ‘being'.

Sufis talk of the way of the heart with such depth, devoting their presence to the ever loving heart guiding each and every day towards the way of ‘being’.

Whatever exists in the body will travel through the heart, rhythmically pumping again and again.

May this be healing for the heart knows its presence in the human ‘being.’

May the heart be our home,

Our ‘doing’

Our ‘being’
