Soulful Singing
Singing in groups is often linked to choirs, sometimes even religious but I believe soulful singing is beyond religion, for it is the reunion of connection within community.
A few months ago, I took my elderly father to church. It was a surprise visit as it was a spontaneous decision from him. We walked in together and friends of my mother ensured that he could sit with her.
I was going to leave as I felt my task was complete, but after seeing my mothers face light up with happiness witnessing her husband arriving, I chose to stay.
I hardly ever attend events like this in churches but this day was different.
We were invited to sing hymns and so I stood up and found the words to follow. Everyone was singing, some raising their hands in the air. I softly sang internalising my intentions for sharing my voice. To my surprise I began to cry.
I questioned why am I crying?
I do not follow the same faith as others who stand in this building, but within this moment, I recognised the power of ‘Soulful Singing’.
As I write this reflection, now I place my hand on my heart and I deeply connect to the power and presence of ‘Soulful Singing’.
I remember when I first visited Estonia, hearing the sacred ‘Regilaud’ songs and how the women shared these ancient folk songs so beautifully.
In this English church, I looked around witnessing the many people singing. I did not hear hymns being sung. I heard voices singing together, communicating with each other.
I witnessed these hymns as invitations to follow but I felt the connection everyone felt as they sang was much deeper.
For me, it was ancient……
And this moment guided my awareness towards the songs of faith, hope and love. Embracing the power of ‘Soulful Singing’ as a ceremony to share with each another.
Yes, I was standing in a church, surrounded by beliefs that I do not personally follow. But it was a building with an intention, holding a belief to follow.
For me, what I witnessed was a connection to ‘Soulful Singing’.
I listened to the stories being shared about Jesus and his life. I questioned their influence and guidance to follow him, but within all these words I felt a depth of love. A connection of loving awareness existed between all who stood within this building, both young and old.
So, as I get closer to the end of this ‘reflection’ I return to the power of ‘Soulful Singing’.
This creative expression has been practised for thousands of years bringing people together in community.
But my question is what are we doing when we meet in our communities?
Are we communicating openly?
Or are we communicating within limited beliefs that separate us from the power of love?
People may argue and disagree within religions, but when we simply connect to the depths of ourselves with loving awareness, we can embrace the power of ‘Soulful Singing’.
I believe we are soul
I believe we are full
Within this belief, let us sing the songs of love.
LET US SING THE SONGS OF LOVE
